UK subcontractors do not lose tenders because they never saw the notice. They lose because they saw too many. Find a Tender, Contracts Finder, and regional portals publish more live opportunities than a ten-person firm can price well. Chase everything and you submit late, thin, or both.
You do not need a full-time estimator to fix that. You need a ruthless weekly filter — and the discipline to discard.
Four signals that actually matter
Package fit: does the scope need your trade, or are you forcing a match? Geography: can you resource the site without killing margin? Buyer type: direct client, main contractor, or framework — each has a different chase cost. Timing: is the submission window realistic given current workload?
If any of those four fails, the notice is a watch item or a discard, not a pursue. Most teams skip that conversation and open the prelims anyway.
A Monday habit that protects capacity
Review your top five ranked tender opportunities. Mark two as pursue, one as watch, and explicitly discard the rest. Discarding is the skill. It protects hours for conversations and pricing on work you can win.
Over a quarter, compare awards against what you prioritised. If high-fit items convert better than opportunistic quotes, keep the rules. If not, tighten geography or package size — do not add another portal login.
BuildBeacon ranks public tenders against your trade profile, region, and urgency so tender alerts for subcontractors arrive as a short act-now list, not a flat CSV export from five websites.
